Returning to Westlake Plastic Surgery after previously having gynecomastia surgery our patient is ready to undergo his “Inverted T” abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, after having lost about 140 pounds by diet and exercise. With the extreme amount of weight loss there remains a large amount of excess skin, an abdominoplasty is required to remove the extra skin, as it will not naturally disappear. Having firsthand experience with his surgical excellence and experience, our patient naturally returns for this follow-up procedure in the care of Dr. Robert Caridi.
When evaluating the abdominoplasty “game plan” for the patient, Dr. C elects for the Inverted T tummy tuck method. Liposuction will be performed on the backside/flanks and will surely provide a huge improvement simply because of the large amount of fat present. It will also aid on the frontend by making it easier to perform the tummy tuck with less obstructions. The Inverted T male abdominoplasty method involves a horizontal (suprapubic region) and vertical scar that will both pull down towards the horizontal and inwards to the vertical, resembling an upside-down "T" that it gets its name from. The Belt Lipectomy tummy tuck method was a candidate but was ultimately not elected due to both it not being an outpatient procedure (it would require hospitalization) and due to the extra risks and complications involved.

This is due to two reasons, the first being that there is an increasing risk of complications the longer the procedure takes.. Cosmetic surgery is an art and despite acquiring a doctorate, not all surgeons will be as good as others, some just have the “eye” for it.
With the patient safely and peacefully under anesthesia, Dr. Caridi marks out the horizontal and vertical paths that will help guide him during the Inverted T tummy tuck. It is immediately evident that a large ellipse-shaped portion of tissue will need to be removed. Despite the large amounts of skin resection needed, special care will be need around the area at which the vertical and horizontal scars meet because it is a common area where wound healing issues are more prevalent. Also, because the blood vessels do not change when there is a major weight loss and are still exceptionally large in diameter, special consideration must be taken and achieving good hemostasis is imperative to reduce the already higher risk of hematoma formation.

After liposuction of the backend and flanks, the belly button is exteriorized for repositioning later. Dr. C was more conservative in how much skin he did remove than what he thought would have to be removed. Back in the office eight months after his Inverted T tummy tuck, Dr. C can examine his progress and we get to see just how well his recovery has been. Despite gaining about 20 pounds, his skin is looking amazing, his skin color is fantastic, the scars are looking exceptionally good and he is healing beautifully. His recovery is going so well that it is looking better than his gynecomastia surgery recovery, which was performed some time before his abdominoplasty.
