In a presentation at the American Society of Nutrition conference, Dr. Arne Astrup shared some studies showing that meals that are higher in protein and lower in carbohydrate naturally increases levels of GLP-1 released from the intestine which in turn leads to higher satiety, or the feeling of fullness after a meal. GLP-1 stimulates satiety by signaling in the brain to suppress appetite and also slows gastric emptying, so you feel full for longer. These are some of the underlying mechanisms of protein-induced satiety, and a good reminder to aim to incorporate some protein into meals and snacks. That’s what science tastes like.
