Loss of water weight was the main focus of weight loss with diuretics (similar to present-day water pills). The loss of water occurs via urination, leading to loss of salt but also essential minerals in the urine. Diuretics are not usually prescribed as a long-term therapy, and some people take them sporadically to shed weight. While water pills work for weight loss, do not underestimate the diuretic impact they have on a body, the risks or benefits associated with them.
The Mechanism of Action of Water Pills
They target different sites of the kidney to increase sodium excretion along the route it takes through the kidneys. This increases water excretion in proportion. Currently, there are three types of diuretics: thiazide diuretics, loop diuretics, and potassium-sparing diuretics. Thiazide diuretics target the site where potassium is reabsorbed along the distal tubules of the kidney, thereby promoting a bit more sodium and water excretion. Loop diuretics act on the loop of Henle in the kidney (a longer stretch where sodium is reabsorbed) and are much more effective at increasing urine production. Potassium-sparing diuretics target the collecting ducts in the kidney and retain potassium while promoting sodium and water excretion.
Over the course of the day, then, diuretics should cause the body to eliminate some fluid and thus some weight – although all that’s happening is that water and electrolytes are being shed, not fat.
Potential Side Effects of Water Pills
While water pills may help you lose water weight, they can also cause side effects. According to the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, the most common side effects of diuretics include dehydration, electrolyte depletion (eg, low potassium), dizziness, thirst, and urination. More severe side effects of diuretics can include kidney damage, gout, and irregular heart rhythms.
This medication should be used under a doctor’s supervision and in the dose they instruct; prolonged diuretic use can result in dehydration and electrolyte disturbances, and higher doses can have other side-effects.
Benefits of Using Water Pills
Although water pills carry the risks we’ve discussed, they can be beneficial for some medical problems. Heart medicines known as diuretics are prescribed for high blood pressure, heart failure and fluid accumulation in the body (called oedema or fluid retention). By lowering the amount of fluid in one’s system, these pills can decrease blood pressure, reduce the oedema, and relieve the symptoms of heart failure.
Water pills can be a quick fix for those who want to shed some weight and feel lighter, especially for their wedding day by getting rid of the extra bloating and water weight. But, at the same time, if individuals want to shed weight healthily, water pills won’t lead to sustainable and healthy weight loss as any weight loss with a diuretic is just short-term and unnatural. Getting into a healthy weight and maintaining it requires sustainable healthy habits such as having a balanced diet and exercising regularly.
Considerations Before Using Water Pills for Weight Loss
Weight-loss pills meant to excrete more water should be taken with caution. While they might transport water out of the body, which could shed pounds temporarily, they are a route to nowhere. Nor should you start using pills like water pills diuretics without talking to your healthcare provider. These drugs help shed water, but that doesn’t make them magic beans for losing weight.
Also, watch for the possible (though rare) side effects of water pills. You will likely need to drink fluids and have your electrolytes checked while taking them. If you are concerned about any effects from the diuretics, including very bad dizziness, severe muscle cramps or spasms, or irregular heartbeats, contact your doctor right away.
