MC shares in this episode that many people and doctors are making the decision to use the GLP1/GIP drugs by using microdoses of the drug instead of the approved doses for weight loss or menopause symptoms.
There is a common concept of using drugs: Doctors often decide to use a medication "off-label." The idea is to use a drug that a doctor knows about from either medical publications or knowledge about the potential of the use of a drug for specific conditions. The drug is not FDA approved at either the dose or for everyday use, but the doctor wants to see if it might help the medical condition a patient is experiencing.
GLP1 drugs are being used off-label, but not always by the prescribing doctor. Safety can be a concern, but here are a few reasons why microdosing can be considered:
Microdosing of a GLP-1 drug refers to the practice of starting treatment with a very small (subtherapeutic) dose of a GLP-1 receptor agonist, such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza), or others, and then gradually increasing the dose over time.
Purpose of Microdosing GLP-1 Drugs:
1. Minimize side effects: GLP-1 drugs commonly cause nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Starting with a very low dose helps the body adjust and reduces the risk of these adverse effects.
2. Improve tolerability: Patients can better tolerate the medication long-term.
3. Customized response: Some patients are more sensitive and may respond well to smaller doses.
4. Off-label use: In some cases, microdosing may be used off-label for weight loss or metabolic benefits in non-diabetic patients.
Important Note: Microdosing is not officially approved by drug manufacturers or regulators. It is typically done under the guidance of a healthcare provider, often with compounded formulations.
MC shares that doing a form of microdosing by extending the use by taking the drug at the prescribed dose, but extending the frequency of the drug because of the expense.
What is most important is to do this in collaboration with your doctor.
