Have you ever wondered just how much cardio you have to do to burn one pound of body fat? I'm on the Rogue Echo Bike today—one of the toughest cardio machines out there—and I'm on a mission to find out. A pound of fat is about 3500 calories, so if I want to make a dent in that, I have some serious work to do. My goal is to burn as many calories as I can in one minute. Once I have that number, we'll do a little math and, voila, we'll have our answer. Spoiler alert. It's depressing. I started off strong, but, like all who dare push themselves on this bike, I soon found myself in a dark place. In the end, I burned 62 calories in one hellish minute. Not bad, right? I mean, hey, you try it. But here’s the kicker. To burn a pound of body fat, I’d need 55 more minutes at this utterly unsustainable pace, and that’s not happening. Even the fittest athletes can only keep up a work rate of about 15 calories a minute on this bike. For non-athletes, figure it's 10-12. At that rate, it would take 5-6 hours to burn just one pound of fat…and ain't nobody got time for that.
