In a standard diet, carbohydrates are the primary source of energy. These carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which is used for energy. The keto diet restricts carbohydrate intake to typically less than 50 grams per day, sometimes as low as 20 grams. The body stores glucose in the liver and muscles as glycogen.
