Although known best for his roles in The Big Lebowski and Monsters, Inc, the well-known John Goodman has had a long struggle with his weight. Goodman has been unusually candid about his ups and downs, as well as his personal approach to maintaining a healthier lifestyle. With this in mind, let’s examine the John-Goodman-weight-loss story.
The Turning Point
The fluctuating heft that everyone around him had known for ages finally showed up in the gossip pages, but now friends worried that his bulking up presaged a stroke or heart attack. Then came a doctor’s shout. Goodman was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, his blood sugars and cholesterol soaring. He had to make changes, and make them immediately. Today, a 42.5-pound difference separates Goodman’s past weight from his current, trim geekhood.
‘The diagnosis was a catalyst for me,’ Goodman told me soon after his 2006 diagnosis. ‘It really woke me up. I knew I had to start living a healthy lifestyle, and drop the pounds.’ With the support of his family and some doctors who specialised in adjusting the surgery, Goodman began his long road to weight loss. ‘I felt like I had a purpose now,’ he said.
And as he pursued better health, Goodman made some diet and lifestyle changes. He started eating a whole-foods diet and stopped consuming most processed or sugar-laden foods. He began exercising habitually, walking, swimming and regularly lifting weights.
Commitment to Change
But since those changes were substantial, huge and society-changing, it’s understandable that they didn’t happen all at once, and he understood there were pitfalls that needed to be worked through along the way. And he did. He failed, and then he succeeded, and sometimes he failed a bit again before succeeding once more and, eventually, long-term success was the way to go. John Goodman helped people grow a stomach for health and fitness.
But in his commitment to stopping the damage and changing, Goodman looked beyond himself, striving for a different identity, and seeing himself as accountable not just for what it said about his physical health but also for his mental and emotional wellbeing. ‘I switched doctors because I couldn’t stand the old doctor who never heard a word of what I said,’ he says. ‘I had a heart attack when I was 46. Felt every pulse. Always in sync with my heart, even before he heard it.’ He consulted therapists and other professionals to get to the bottom of nagging emotional issues that may have interfered with his weight. In all of that, he resisted receiving special treatment because of his political status. ‘They didn’t know about my identity,’ says Goodman.
Self-care and self-love remain paramount, even as Goodman endeavours to shed his pounds. Weight loss is ultimately a private endeavour, an internal experience. As such, it necessitates self-compassion, self-acceptance and a rigorous practice of patience and nonjudgmental awareness. By cultivating kindness towards himself and all who share his path, Goodman is more likely to demonstrate a positive attitude in the face of adversity – in some cases, quite a bit of adversity.
Celebrating Success
The more weight John Goodman lost, the more it showed. Fans and followers couldn’t help but notice: Wow, Goodman! Keep up the good work. His new, svelte figure became another example that with focus and effort, the impossible can become possible.
Goodman, instead, was rescuing himself from a that trapped his physical self from fully expressing its vitality Each of these examples emphasise not only that overweight and obese individuals can – and have – lost large amounts of weight, but that their slimmer selves are just one facet of the new-found balance responsible for improving their ability to sustain a healthier life. In other words, each affirms that a healthier you is about more than appearances. One interpretation might argue that this is an implicit endorsement of the ‘successful losers’ paradigm, where the ‘true’ gene-based determinant of obesity remains subliminal, leaving those deemed to be ‘cured’ to rekindle their inner presence in the face of persistent adversity. Nonetheless, each of the candidates for a non-prevailing paradigm offers much more than just an alternative scenario. What has become abundantly clear is that by prioritising their weight, each of them has additionally prioritised their overall health and wellbeing, and the ability to live more complete lives. These stories offer some intriguing insight into how the power of perseverance and self-caring can offset much of what might otherwise be preordained by nature.
John Goodman, according to recent reports, is still very much alive, and seemingly maintaining his fitness regimen. His story is an awesome testament to the fact that it’s never too late for a reinvention of health. None of us is too old for self-love; we should all, if we truly care for ourselves, be striving for a Goodman moment to help us address our personal needs, starting now.
