And while we CAN lose belly fat, we can't significantly TARGET our fat loss there with ab workouts like leg raises, situps, or crunches. "Spot reduction" with exercise is not effective.* We lose fat proportionately throughout our body with diet and exercise. Individuals do tend to store fat in different areas, but this is largely up to genetics. *I'm aware of some more recent studies that show some spot reduction by doing high-intensity workouts in an area followed by cardio. But simply popping a green tea pill won’t boost fat oxidation the same way it would when ingesting green tea via a cup, especially if other supplements are being ingested at the same time. This year, a Japanese study not only examined how a green tea pill treated a supplement user who hadn’t previously consumed the beverage, but how the pill’s effectiveness compared with a pill containing the key active compounds found in green tea, EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) and catechin. The study’s authors found that not only did the green tea pill deliver more of the overall antioxidants, but ‘that EG-CG, [sic] a component of green tea, significantly contributed to the enhanced [fat] oxidation after green tea ingestion. In contrast to the application of supplements for CDGT [catechin dimer galactosyl glucoside] and EGCG alone.’ The study added that ‘it would be unscientific to draw conclusions about the efficacy of green tea and its constituents on the basis of the published data only for the CDGT- and EGCG-administrated groups’. Green tea pills might aid weight loss and help treat diabetes, but hardly as dramatically as supplement makers claim, so we’ll have to wait for more data. Results won’t necessarily be dramatic among supplement-takers: a 2003 study linked five green tea supplements that were evaluated for their anti-obesity properties, but saw varying results. ‘Our […] data indicate little change in fat oxidation between subjects,’ observed the study’s authors.
