Currently all the rage, the Ketogenic diet, or keto diet, has skyrocketed to popularity for its weight-loss and supposed health benefits. As this controversial high-fat, low-carb eating plan has boomed in popularity, so have corner-market products and supplements designed to help individuals stay in ketosis and maintain their way of life. Enter Keto, which made its debut on Shark Tank, the hit reality TV show focused on investing. But all of this keto hype and air time has done more to confuse the general public than anything. So, amidst the hype about Keto, what is real and what is false when it comes to what this product is doing for our body?
Unpacking Keto’s Appearance on Shark Tank
If you haven’t heard about Keto yet, you should’ve been paying attention to Shark Tank: Keto — a supplement whose claim to fame is that it helps you lose weight faster and supports your body to meet the targets of a ketogenic diet without ‘actual’ keto dieting. The pitch by the co-inventors of Keto was that, while following a keto diet means consuming very little carbohydrates and replacing them with fats to put your body into a state of ketosis, it was challenging for non-trained consumers to keep carbs low enough for their body to use fat for fuel. This is where supplements such as Keto claim to come in handy.
Although the entrepreneurs pitched Keto to the Sharks as a viable business in addition to a healthy beverage with significant market appeal, they still had some questions. One investor asked about the product’s ingredients, one about scientific support, and one about its long-term sustainability. In the end, this audience of wannabe tycoons didn’t buy in. No Shark invested in the entrepreneurs’ beverage. Many of us watching at home walked away with doubts about the science behind Keto, wondering if it really worked.
After its appearance on Shark Tank, Keto took off. At that point, it was already reporting $2.6 million in sales, which seemingly validated Savet’s claim to Shark Tank’s judges that Keto was ‘the next big thing in diet supplementation’. According to the company’s website, Keto boosts the metabolism, reduces appetite and increases energy levels, but you do this at your own risk since there’s no research to suggest the product actually works, and no government oversight for diet supplements.
The Real Effects of Keto: Separating Hype from Reality
Although I am sure Keto wants you to believe this concoction allows you to shed weight quickly while giving you a new lease on your health elixir, the truth is, there are not many studies that indicate this (and there are none proving the effectiveness and safety of the finished product). Keto may provide people with a temporary culinary remedy to help those who want an ultra-low-carbohydrate diet, but they do so at a very high health cost. As my literature review demonstrates, the ketogenic diet in and of itself has many plant-based foods (which is encouraging for a proven heart-healthy diet) and the appropriate moderation of food groups. However, none of that can be said for Keto, the product itself. Without basic research and clinical studies on the product, it’s difficult to determine its effectiveness and safety.
While some say they have more energy, less cravings and are losing fat quickly on Keto (it’s supposed to facilitate burning fat, which is why some see it as a fad diet), others say they don’t notice a big change in weight loss or overall wellness, and if you do your own search for Keto supplements on Amazon (which has loads of reviews on the popular products), you’ll see that some had severe side effects, such as gas, headaches and fatigue. Some said they didn’t notice a change while others say they noticed a change in weight loss. Are you convinced yet? Perhaps it’s best to start with a session with your doctor.
Despite this, it’s important to consider Keto and others like it with suspicion, measured faith and a skeptical view. The strong, immediate attraction of Keto and the whole low-carb ethos – quick and impressive weight loss, supposedly lasting health improvements – is no match for decades of built-up dietary wisdom. We still haven’t been able to throw our hands up and scream: ‘dude, just drink some olive oil’ There’s nothing wrong with trying these supplements on your own. But it is important to do so with the guidance of a medical professional – or at minimum a nutritionist – who can help make sense of the ketogenic diet, where it may fit into your own lifestyle, and help you determine if adding in Keto – or others like it – is the right decision for you.
Conclusion: Navigating the Keto Hype
From a Keto appearance on Shark Tank came curiousities but more importantly, realistic expectations and an understanding of risks associated with the product. Weight loss and proper health can be achieved with the ketogenic diet but only if done right. Neither Keto nor many other supplements can act as a shortcut to the important lifestyle changes necessary to achieve these health goals. We must focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods, regular physical activity and lifestyle change. Otherwise, we will be nibbling at the latest diet craze, looking for another ‘golden pill’ to fix all of our health problems.
